Julius Caesar (2005)It is hard to overstate the role that drama has played at Mission Valley Christian Academy.  We're a small school with very limited material means, so we can't look to a sports team or a facility to "put us on the map."  However, our annual drama production has become the event that most distinguishes our school in the eyes of the community at large.  If you ask any of our 28 alumni what was the most memorable and rewarding aspect of their MVCA education, you're likely to hear one word: the drama.

Drama went from an extracurricular idea in 1993-1995 to an integral part of the warp and woof of an MVCA calendar year and a required event for completion of the humanities curriculum in the upper school.  It's where our ideals of Christian and classical education come together for us most satisfyingly.

Since our production of William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing in 1995, Shakespeare plays have been the staple of our repertoire: Hamlet (1996, 2008), The Merchant of Venice (1997), A Midsummer Night's Dream (1998), Twelfth Night (1999), As You Like It (2000), Macbeth (2001), The Taming of the Shrew (2002), Julius Caesar (2005), Much Ado About Nothing (2006) and Love's Labor's Lost (2007).  In 2003, we performed Pierre Corneille's El Cid.  A number of stories and historic events have been converted into play form by our directors: The Esther Musical, A Christmas Carol, The Martyrdom of St. Alban, and Our Mutual Friend (2004).

Creation of authentic sets and costumes have become part of the expected fare of MVCA productions as well as the high-quality acting that we expect and receive from our students who know what's possible because of what has been achieved in previous years.
